Death of TV?

Slate has an interesting book review/article discussing the future of advertising, specifically the 30 second spot on TV. With more and more people either avoiding commercials through the use of DVR or getting content on the web directly, it will be harder and harder for TV channels to support themselves with advertising. I can easily imagine people having to subscribe to individual shows or more networks like HBO and Showtime popping up to produce quality shows as otherwise there will be no money to make those shows. TV stations will always be able to get advertising during major live events like the Superbowl, but won’t be able to charge as much as they do now. This probably also means reality TV isn’t going anywhere.
